Bob Dole, Known professionally as Robert Joseph Dole was an American politician and attorney who represented Kansas in the United States Senate from 1969 to 1996. He was born on July 22, 1923, in Russell, Kansas, U.S. to Bina M. (née Talbott; 1904) and Doran Ray Dole
At age 22, Dole joined the United States Army’s Enlisted Reserve Corps to fight in World War II. Dole became a second lieutenant in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division.
Dole’s political career began when he was 27 years old. He chose to run for office for the first time in 1950 and was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives which he served for two years. Since then was baptized in the game of politics, defeating former Kansas Governor William H. Avery for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate to succeed retiring Senator Frank Carlson.
