At age 22, Dole joined the United States Army’s Enlisted Reserve Corps to fight in World War II. Dole became a second lieutenant in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division.

Dole’s political career began when he was 27 years old.  He chose to run for office for the first time in 1950 and was elected to the Kansas House of Representatives which he served for two years. Since then was baptized in the game of politics, defeating former Kansas Governor William H. Avery for the Republican nomination for the United States Senate to succeed retiring Senator Frank Carlson.

Dole has married twice. Dole married Phyllis Holde in 1948 and divorced on January 11, 1972. Dole met his second wife, Elizabeth, in 1972. The couple was married on December 6, 1975. They had no children
